September 2017 Newsletter - Firm Updates

Hayes Girling Financial Newsletter

Welcome to the Hayes Girling Financial September Newsletter. In typical HGF fashion, we have plenty of news items to report.

Relaunch of our website

We are proud to announce that our new website has just gone live! A huge thanks to Jade for all of her hard work. Jade has worked tirelessly over the past few months, liaising with our new digital marketing provider, ironing out any issues and editing content. Please take a few minutes to have a look, we would love to hear your feedback.

2017 Women & Financial Planning Gala

Louise has turned her attention to educating people about the importance of work life balance and helping others focus on their true core assets, themselves. Louise will be sharing her own personal story in the hope of inspiring others to focus on the important things in life.

There will then be an open Q & A session with a panel of professional women, where the audience will be encouraged to get involved and ask any questions they may have.

We will also have on offer a great range of market stalls, drinks, canapés and a free gift bag for all attendees. If you haven’t already reserved a ticket, please do so today by clicking the link below.

Late night tax appointments

Our late night tax appointments will be finishing up on the 31st October 2017. If you need an appointment outside of business hours, we recommend you get in quick to ensure you don’t miss out. Alternatively, if you don’t have the time for an appointment, you can email your documents to us for processing. We have a 3 business day turn around policy, once all documents are received.

Staff Updates

After 18 years with HGF Nita decided it was time to retire. Nita has been a much-loved part of the team and will be missed by staff and clients alike. We wish her the very best during the next phase of her life.

You may have noticed a few travel photos on social media as Barry and Trini enjoyed some much-needed down time. Trini and her husband headed to North America, exploring some wonderful sites while Barry returned to Italy to soak up some sunshine.

Updates from the ATO

The ATO has recently announced changes to depreciation for rental properties. Click on the link below to see how you may be affected by these changes.

Have you got a Will? If so, is it up to date?

The Victorian government is making significant changes to how a person’s assets are distributed if they pass away interstate, that is, without a Will. These changes could see the deceased’s spouse receiving their entire estate without anything being set aside for their children, as the current law provides. The surviving spouse would be obligated to put money aside for their step-children, albeit a reduced amount compared to the present rules. If a couple is separated, but not divorced the deceased’s ‘ex’ will still receive their whole estate, regardless of being separated.

Without a Will, your estate may benefit the wrong people and leave an expensive legal mess for your loved ones. Everyone has their own unique circumstances, therefore these laws imposed by the government will not always result in an appropriate distribution to your family. Having a Will means you decide. Please contact one of our advisers should you need assistance in preparing or updating your Will.

Warning – email scams

A quick reminder of how vigilant we must all be when opening emails, both work and personal. One of our clients recently advised us of a fraudulent email circulating, claiming to be from DocuSign. Most of our clients are aware that we utilise DocuSign daily, for electronic signing and we are happy to report we have not encountered any issues. Please always check where your emails are being sent from, if in doubt, do not open it. Scammers are becoming more sophisticated and we must ensure we take greater care to ensure we don’t become victims of these scams. The ATO, ASIC & Australia Post are often targeted by scammers as these organisations attract individuals, if you are unsure whether an email is legitimate, you are welcome to contact the team for assistance.
